Bafana Bafana Sweep Aside Lesotho to Edge Closer to World Cup
Mohau Nkota opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a composed finish, marking his first goal for the national team. Despite a scrappy first half with several fouls, Bafana Bafana held a deserved 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, South Africa increased their dominance. Lyle Foster doubled the lead in the 63rd minute, capitalising on a rebound from a powerful shot by Aubrey Modiba. Just four minutes later, Oswin Appollis extended the advantage with a clinical finish, sealing the 3-0 victory.
The game saw some early setbacks with injuries to Nyiko Mobbie and Thabo Moloisane, but Bafana Bafana’s defence held strong. The team controlled the match, dominating possession with 68% and completing nearly twice as many passes as Lesotho. They also created more chances in the attacking third.
This win solidified South Africa’s lead in Group C with 16 points from seven matches, moving them closer to automatic World Cup qualification. South Africa’s next challenge is a pivotal home clash against Nigeria on 9 September 2025.
Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Peace Mabe, praised the team’s performance and called for national support as South Africa aims for a return to the World Cup stage.
The win demonstrated Bafana Bafana’s skill, spirit, and determination — qualities that continue to inspire the nation as they chase football glory.
Final score:
Lesotho 0
South Africa 3 (Nkota 16’, Foster 63’, Appollis 67’)
